New Referrals

How do I make my first appointment?

What happens during my first consultation?

We like patients to be referred to the Birmingham and Solihull Bladder Clinic through their GPs.

This is because your GP understands your medical history and is responsible for your care.

However, we do accept patients who wish to approach the clinic directly. Simply make an appointment and bring your GP’s referral letter with you.

  • You can make an appointment by telephoning 0870 850 3865
  • Your GP can fax a referral letter on 0121 446 1679
  • To make a referral by e-mail info@thebladderclinic.co.uk

Once we receive a referral form from you or your GP, we will see you, at your convenience, usually within one week.

What happens during my first consultation?

You will be seen by the consultant who will take a history of the problems you are experiencing. This will involve going through the details of how your problem started and any thing that aggravates or relieves the problem. This will cover the duration of bladder problem, especially during childhood years, during pregnancy and after delivery, previous investigations and any previous surgery.

The consultant will ask you about how much and what fluid you drink, how often you use the toilet. This private, one-to-one consultation will provide the opportunity to discuss important problems which you may have been reluctant to talk about, such as sexual problems. Attention will be paid to how your problems affect your daily life.

A careful past medical history will be taken. This will cover any serious illness or operations in the past. The consultant will ask about any current medication or allergies, as well as smoking and drinking habits. Relevant family history may be enquired about, especially diabetes, heart disease and glaucoma.

Examination

A general physical examination will be performed including an examination of the abdomen. In women, a pelvic examination (internal) will be offered to look for infections, prolapse and urinary leakage on coughing or straining. Often a digital rectal examination will also be required for the prostate in men.

A chaperone will be offered to all patients with the opportunity to decline if they wish. If you need an infection screen or a smear at the same time this can be done for you. Please speak to your consultant when you see him or her.
